Goodnight My Son, I Love You

On September 22, 1998, my son, Joel Serlin, took his life by suicide. Up until that time, we had joined together researching, working together to find solutions to his mental-illness. When he invited me into his world, he trusted me with his deepest pain. He taught me so much, and together we learned from each other every step of the way.  I was his teacher and his student. When he committed suicide, I felt like a part of me died with him. I simply could not accept that he couldn’t win his fight to survive. After his death, our bond grew and deepened. Before, I had felt grateful he invited me into his inner world. In death, I was even more touched that he shared his journey on the other side. Goodnight My Son, I Love You is the story of our journey together. It is a story of a mother and son who embraced each other completely. It is Joel’s message to those who are suicidal. It is my message to those in grief that, eventually, living with suicide can turn tragedy into triumph. Love does indeed last forever.
